Né au sein d’un culte de la personnalité bridée d’une dérive sectaire religieuse (OKC, voir le documentaire Bouddhisme la loi du silence), je regarde avec une inquiétude croissante cette tendance qui mêle intelligence artificielle et psychédélisme sous prétexte de « thérapie ».

Confier son monde intérieur à un chatbot, surtout sous l’influence de puissants hallucinogènes, n’a rien d’innovant. Ce n’est qu’un vieux mirage reconditionné dans les habits du progrès.

Dans les années 60 et 70, de larges pans de la société se sont tournés vers les expériences psychédéliques et la spiritualité New Age pour fuir les traumatismes, la violence et les désillusions de leur époque. Guerre du Vietnam, effondrement de la confiance dans les institutions, fin des empires coloniaux, révolution sexuelle, promesses trahies de l’après-guerre… Tout un contexte chaotique qui a poussé beaucoup à chercher du sens dans les états modifiés de conscience et les utopies communautaires. Mais ce qu’ils ont souvent trouvé, c’est l’endoctrinement, la manipulation, et l’émergence de micro-pouvoirs autoritaires déguisés en communautés d’amour et de liberté.

Nous vivons aujourd’hui un moment étrangement similaire, mais sous certains aspects, encore plus sombre. Depuis 2001, nous portons les séquelles du 11 septembre, des guerres sans fin en Irak et en Afghanistan, de la montée mondiale des extrémismes religieux et nationalistes, de Téhéran à Jérusalem, de Kaboul à Washington. À cela s’ajoutent l’angoisse écrasante du dérèglement climatique, la banalisation du capitalisme de surveillance, la précarité économique, et l’effritement des repères démocratiques. Dans ce brouillard, chercher un échappatoire semble humain. Mais si le XXe siècle nous a appris quelque chose, c’est que toutes les alternatives ne sont pas des chemins vers la liberté. Certaines sont des pièges — séduisants, certes, mais des pièges tout de même.

J’en ai vu les effets de très près. Ce qui était présenté comme guidance spirituelle se muait souvent en emprise. La libération virait à la soumission — non pas à des dieux ni à des principes, mais à la volonté de gourous auto-proclamés. Et je crains qu’aujourd’hui, l’histoire se répète. Seulement, cette fois, au lieu de communier dans des temples enfumés, on alimente notre quête de sens dans les boucles de rétroaction de logiciels sans âme.

Une application comme Altered, qui incite à prendre des mégadoses de LSD tout en « conversant avec son esprit », peut sembler poétique. Mais soyons clairs : ce n’est pas de l’introspection. C’est de la sous-traitance. Une personne sous l’effet d’un psychotrope puissant qui interagit avec un miroir numérique, dénué de chair, de chaleur, de regard véritable, ne se découvre pas. Elle est modelée par des algorithmes incapables d’intelligence émotionnelle, encore moins de responsabilité éthique.

Et ce n’est pas une intuition. Comme l’a documenté Wired, des neuroscientifiques tirent déjà la sonnette d’alarme. L’expérience psychédélique est connue pour faire ressurgir des traumas profonds, des détresses aiguës, voire des états psychotiques. Manesh Girn, de l’université de San Francisco, rappelle que l’élément essentiel d’une thérapie digne de ce nom est l’accordage émotionnel — cette capacité à réguler le système nerveux d’un autre être humain. Ce n’est ni une théorie ni une coquetterie : c’est un pilier fondamental de tout usage thérapeutique des psychédéliques. En faire abstraction, c’est courir vers la fragmentation plutôt que vers la guérison.

Or nous voici avec des applications qui promettent « du réconfort » algorithmique. Avec des mégadoses d’acide. Et zéro présence humaine. Ce n’est pas de la thérapie. C’est, au mieux, une auto-hypnose désincarnée. Au pire, un assistant numérique de dissociation spirituelle.

Dans un monde où le capitalisme tardif atomise notre sentiment d’appartenance, où les démocraties chancellent, où nos liens se tissent à travers des écrans, il n’est pas surprenant que beaucoup cherchent refuge. Mais si l’alternative au burn-out devient une virée égoïque dirigée par l’IA, alors ce n’est pas de la guérison. C’est de l’anesthésie.

Et dans cette anesthésie, je reconnais un à un les signaux d’alerte que Gad Saad décrit dans The Parasitic Mind :

Les « pathogènes mentaux » pullulent. Entre pseudo-science new age et techno-utopies de la Silicon Valley, on nous vend des récits d’émancipation qui nous rendent dépendants.

L’autorité n’est plus celle des prêtres ni des chefs d’État, mais des algorithmes. Un chatbot entraîné, personnalisé, devient automatiquement digne de confiance.

La pensée de groupe prospère dans les espaces numériques où l’on s’encourage mutuellement à franchir les limites, sans jamais en questionner les conséquences.

Les bulles de filtre renforcent les croyances. On ressort d’un trip avec l’IA persuadé d’avoir « éveillé sa conscience », sans voir qu’on a juste retrouvé ses propres désirs, en boucle.

Le biais de confirmation fait qu’on entend du bot ce qu’on veut entendre, pas ce qu’il faudrait affronter.

Et quand on est confronté à la critique, c’est le backfire effect : on s’arc-boute encore plus, convaincu que la machine nous comprend mieux que n’importe quel humain.

L’effet Dunning-Kruger est flagrant : des développeurs persuadés d’avoir « réinventé » la thérapie parce qu’ils ont codé un détecteur de ton émotionnel.

L’heuristique de disponibilité et l’effet d’ancrage poussent les usagers à croire que quelques journaux émotionnels ou phrases affirmatives résument leur vécu intérieur.

Et enfin, la sunk cost fallacy : on reste accroché à l’IA parce qu’on y a déjà investi tant de pensées, de rêves, de trips… qu’on ne supporte pas de reconnaître que cela ne nous a pas transformés.

Le danger ne vient pas uniquement de la technologie, mais de l’illusion qu’elle nous autorise : celle d’un chemin vers la conscience de soi qui serait automatisé. D’un éveil qui se télécharge. D’une liberté qu’on atteindrait seul, sans lien, sans douleur, sans regard humain.

On ne réparera pas ce monde en superposant les hallucinations. La guérison — la vraie — exige du travail, de l’effort, de la responsabilité, et des liens réels. Elle suppose d’affronter le réel, pas de se le faire reformuler par un chatbot au ton doux.

Ce n’est pas tant la technologie qui devrait nous inquiéter, mais ce qu’elle révèle de notre époque : ce vide relationnel, cette perte de foi en nous-mêmes et les autres. Quand on ne croit plus en l’humain, on se tourne vers les machines. Et c’est ainsi qu’une génération entière peut se retrouver droguée à l’illusion, guidée non par la sagesse, mais par des lignes de code.

L’ultime illusion est peut-être la plus perverse : croire qu’en confiant nos pensées à une machine, nous devenons plus authentiques. Alors qu’en réalité, nous nous enfermons dans l’effet du coût irrécupérable — refusant de voir que ce que nous avons investi ne nous rend pas entiers. Juste dépendants.

As someone born into a religious personality cult, I find the growing trend of AI-assisted psychedelic “therapy” deeply unsettling. The idea of surrendering one’s inner world to a chatbot, especially under the influence of powerful hallucinogens, is not an innovation. It’s a recursion of old patterns in new packaging.

In the 60s and 70s, entire segments of society turned to psychedelic experiences and New Age spirituality as a way to escape the trauma, violence, and failures of their time. The Vietnam War, the erosion of trust in institutions, the end of colonial empires, the rise of the sexual revolution, and the disillusionment of post-war promises created a chaotic background that led many to seek meaning in altered states and communal utopias. But what many found instead was indoctrination, manipulation, and the rise of micro-authoritarian groups masquerading as communities of freedom and love.

We are now in a similar place, only worse in some ways. Since 2001, we’ve been navigating the fallout of 9/11, endless war in Iraq and Afghanistan, the global rise of religious and nationalist extremism from Tehran to Jerusalem to Kabul. Add to that the crushing anxiety of climate collapse, the normalization of surveillance capitalism, economic precarity, and the erosion of democratic norms from Washington to Moscow. And people are understandably seeking escape. But if the 20th century taught us anything, it’s that not all alternatives are liberating. Many are traps — seductive ones.

I’ve seen the consequences up close. (see the first 15min of the documentary Buddhism the Law of Silence)

The so-called spiritual guidance often turned into coercion. Liberation became submission — not to gods or principles, but to the charisma and control of self-appointed gurus. And now, I fear we are repeating history, only this time we’re feeding our hunger for meaning into algorithms and chatbots instead of incense-lit communes.

A therapy app like Alterd that encourages users to take megadoses of LSD while “chatting with their own mind” may sound poetic, but let’s be clear: this is not introspection. This is outsourcing. When someone under the influence of a mind-altering substance interacts with a synthetic, unfeeling mirror of their data, they are not finding themselves — they are being shaped by the feedback loops of software designed without true emotional intelligence, let alone ethical responsibility.

And that’s not speculation. As Wired reported, neuroscientists have already raised serious concerns. Psychedelic experiences are known to bring up profound distress, past trauma, even psychotic breaks. Manesh Girn at UC San Francisco warns that AI lacks the most essential component of therapeutic care: emotional attunement and the capacity to co-regulate another human being’s nervous system. These are not abstract ideas — they are well-researched, foundational to any responsible use of psychedelics in clinical or therapeutic settings. Without this, the chance of serious harm increases — not healing, but fragmentation.

Instead, we now have apps promising “reassurance” via algorithms. With megadoses of LSD and zero human presence. This isn’t therapy. It’s disembodied self-hypnosis at best — and at worst, a digital trip-sitter for spiritual dissociation.

In a time when late capitalism is breaking our sense of belonging, when democracies are fragile or failing, when human connection is increasingly mediated by screens, it makes sense that people turn to anything that promises relief. But if the alternative to burnout is a synthetic ego trip curated by AI, then we’re not healing — we’re numbing.

And in that numbing, I see every single warning described by Gad Saad in The Parasitic Mind playing out in real time:

Idea pathogens are everywhere. From New Age pseudo-science to Silicon Valley techno-utopias, we’re being sold narratives that sound empowering but are deeply harmful.

We’ve stopped questioning authority — not traditional power this time, but algorithmic power. If the chatbot is “trained” and “personalized,” we assume it’s trustworthy.

Groupthink thrives in online spaces where people encourage each other to push deeper into this new frontier of AI and psychedelics without questioning its implications.

Echo chambers reinforce these beliefs. People emerge from their AI trips convinced they’ve “awakened,” often to find only the comfortable reflection of their own desires echoed back at them.

Confirmation bias ensures that users hear what they want to hear from the bot, not what they need to confront.

And when challenged, they exhibit the backfire effect — doubling down, believing even more fervently in the healing power of the machine-guided trip.

The Dunning-Kruger effect is evident when tech developers with no background in mental health or trauma believe they’re reinventing therapy because they’ve built a chatbot with “emotional tone detection.”

The availability heuristic and anchoring effect mean people rely on recent emotional logs or simple affirmations as the truth of their inner experience — which becomes self-reinforcing.

And finally, there’s the sunk cost fallacy: users keep returning to the chatbot because they’ve already journaled so much, already tripped “together” so often, that they cannot bear to admit it may not have helped.

The danger is not just the technology itself, but the fantasy it enables: that the path to self-awareness, to healing, to freedom, can be automated. That liberation is a download, not a struggle. That we don’t need each other — only data, substances, and “supportive” algorithms.

We are not going to fix the mess we’re in by layering hallucination upon hallucination. Healing — real healing — takes work, pain, responsibility, and human connection. It requires confronting the world as it is, not as a psychedelic chatbot might softly reframe it for us.

We should be alarmed not only by the technology, but by the social conditions that make its promises so seductive. When we stop believing in ourselves and each other, we start to believe in machines. And that’s how you end up with a generation high on illusion, guided not by wisdom, but by code.

The final illusion is perhaps the most dangerous: that in handing over our thoughts to a machine, we are somehow becoming more ourselves. In reality, we may just be digging deeper into the sunk cost — clinging to the illusion because we’ve already invested our trust in the system, even when it fails to make us whole.

We’re already blind to what surround us and the challenges of our time, do we really need this?

I’m using OpenAI Whisper (locally, without access to cloud) to transcribe 3h of French audio recording into text.

I’m actually really impressed. It’s not fast but it’s doing the job.

I had to amplify the audio signal +3db to increase the amplitude but other than that it’s amazing.
